I have read a lot of science fiction from the author under her real name. So, I thought, although I dislike the romance genre, this would be a good book because I know KKR is a good writer.

Well, she is; I still think so -- but this book doesn't have a lot going for it. KKR must have churned this out just to pay the bills, or something, because it's far, far away from her best work.

For starters, the book had about four typos in the first few dozen pages. I blame the publishers for this, not the author, but it burns me up to have paid for something that was so poorly edited. Does no one know how to proofread things, anymore? Evidently not.

As to content, the book does pick up significantly after the first hundred pages, when a major plot twist appears. After that, it's an easy slide to the end of the book. But, those first hundred pages was a tough slog. It was like wading through cold mud and I almost gave up once or twice.

The main characters are not very sympathetic -- to me, anyway. Rikki came off better than Misha in that department, but that's not saying too much.

Also, okay, there's a burning attraction between them. But, why isn't really explained. I mean, they're both fit and beautiful. Yeah, we get it. But, since most of the characters in the book are good looking and the society has advanced so that people can get extensive cosmetic treatments, that, again, isn't saying much.

I know it's a romance and so maybe logic isn't expected when it comes to the attraction of the two main characters. But, to me, without a powerful and logical reason why they can't get enough of each other, their powerful sex scenes come across like just so much sexual circus gynastics. In other words, boring.

Oh, another quibble: when writing about future societies that are removed from our own by more than a dozen years, writers really shouldn't have people speaking exactly the way people do now, with the same expressions. I may believe someone in 2022 might still use the term "clueless" (although that really hasn't been popular since the late 90s), but I'm not going to believe that someone from a future time when humanity has spread across the stars would say it. KKR writes very seamless SF under her real name, so I was surprised and put-off by this rookie mistake.

It's not a horrible book. You won't feel as if you've had bleach thrown in your eyes after reading. But, it's not very good, either.

A quick and entertaining read. The author manages multiple plotlines without making the book seem messy or confusing. I wouldn't continue with the series.
The hero and heroine were likeable and smart. This was a rather different twist on the assassin genre that provided fast action and a great romance. I will watch for more from this author.
Read this as part of Felicia Day's Vaginal Fantasy book club. This was the main pick for the month of August. It was fun, but not the best (romance) book I've ever read. A bit predictable at times, but the assassin twist was fun.
This wasn't a bad read, but the characters lacked depth, and there was too much 'magic' masquerading as 'amazing technology', and thin spots in the plot line to take the book seriously. The story was fun and fast paced - I wasn't disappointed, it was exactly what the title implied.
It is a well written novel about the Guild and worlds it is set in. There is a lot of sex in the book and not for the puritan. If you don't want the sex, this isn't the book for you.
I think I was expecting this book to have a more substantial plot. I guess I'm not really used to reading romance books, but I read it for a book club, or I might not have finished it. Some of the writing quirks got on my (and other book club members') nerves, and I just wish that some of the repercussions of the things going on in the world (assassinations aren't illegal? really?) were explored more, but this is coming from someone that typically reads science fiction and fantasy and not romance. If the characters had been noteworthy enough, they might have saved it, but they were not too notable in a good way or a bad way.
I have a bit of mixed feelings about this book. I did like it, but after finishing it, I can't say that I will ever have the urge to read it again.

While I loved the premise, kind of a futuristic Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this book never quite reached the potential of this great story idea. We have 2 rival assassins, both intent on proving to each other just how badass they are and for a while they are actually pitted against one another. Misha is a black and white, paint in the lines, by the book, party line type of assassin. Rikki is more of a fly by the seat of her pants, make it up on the fly, all areas are grey, loner type. It seems at times that their differences were over exaggerated and their characters never really become fully 3 dimensional to me. Add to that a convoluted assassination plot and Rikki's forgotten, murky past that involves Misha and I felt like we had a dart board that the author was throwing all the usual tropes at to see what stuck.

And the thing that was most annoying to me b/c it kept pulling me out of the story, was the overuse of parentheses. It felt like every internal monologue had to be clarified with parentheses. Rikki couldn't just think something, it had to be explained (b/c the author didn't think we would get it). It was practically every sentence (and sometimes twice in one sentence!). We get that Rikki was conflicted about Misha and her attraction to him (but we didn't need constant clarification!). Grrrr... I guess this is a case of too much telling instead of showing. I understood that Rikki had justifiable reasons for being attracted to Misha and when she realized who he was, how horrified she was by that. I don't really know how to explain this but it felt like someone was snapping their fingers in front of my face to make sure that I "understood" exactly how Rikki or Misha felt.

Despite all that, I felt like the story was original and fast paced. The action sequences and some of the romantic tension scenes were vivid and sharp. But... it was like I was waiting for this book to crest high and I was disappointed that it didn't reach quite as high as I'd expect. I also felt like the ending was a bit rushed and the HEA was too trite for this type of story. So I guess I can say that there were some great scenes in this book but overall it kinda fell flat for me. However, despite the fact that there were quite a few things that didn't work for me, in the end, this book was still entertaining. I still wanted to finish it and see how it played out despite it all. Great potential and I'm willing to give the 2nd book in this series a try when it comes out. So while this book wasn't fantastic for me, I liked the world/premise.

So overall, this book was more of a 3.25 for me.
