Libby has recently lost her job in Chicago and is back home living with her parents. Her father has purchased a historic building to turn into an ice cream parlor and Libby has been tasked to aid in the efforts since she is unemployed. Tom is a construction worker that is working with Libby's dad to help restore and remodel the store. He is a widower with a teenage daughter. He is sad and a bit broken. His relationship with his daughter is strained at best.Libby is a bit silly and is trying to figure out what her next step is going to be in her life. She is attracted to Tom and is working to help draw him out. Tom is also attracted to Libby, but is wanting to just finish the job and move on. He doesn't need things to complicate his life.
The romance slowly builds between the two and there are other family and friends that well round out this story.
The author does a wonderful job building their romance. It's not a "his eyes met hers and there were sparks. he couldn't get her visage out of his head and was determined to MAKE HER HIS OWN!" (cue ominous music here...)
They are both initially a bit wary of each other, but various circumstances throw they together. And these circumstances do not feel overly contrived. Tom helps her family and you can tell that it takes a toll on him (he's worn out and tired). He's not the unstoppable, alpha-male hero. He is all male, but he is seeing a therapist for help.
Both characters are believable and the conversations sound real. The story flows really well and things end with a HEA. But it's not a sickeningly sweet ending (although sometimes I love those!). No cliff hangers. No series of books. Just this one. (phew - thank you T.Brogan!)
It's also very realistic because not EVERYONE thinks they are wonderful. There are older parents that may not feel super happy about how things are going. So that adds an element of realism.
The teenager also takes time to come around and the relationship she has takes time to heal. It's not even fully healed at the ending, but they are certainly on their way.
I like that Tom is hurting, but he is not angst-ridden broken. He doesn't go around whining constantly that he isn't worth anyone's love. He doesn't send Libby mixed signals. When he is confused, he thinks to talk to his therapist b/c he really is trying hard to heal.
There is scene where Libby is hurt by Tom (emotionally), thankfully she doesn't go on a rant and breakdown. She is sad and hurt, but is able to hold onto her feelings and doesn't throw a fit.
These are real people that act pretty rationally.
There is some steaminess, but it's limited to one or two scenes. Just right.
A nice, sweet romance with 'real' people. Where they heal each other, but the heroine helps the hero more - and it's very sweet.
Enjoy.

This is my second read by this author. Crazy Little Thing is one of my favs, with colorful characters, witty banter with real laugh out loud moments with a poignant life event thrown in to make it even more touching. Hold On My Heart has many of these same elements, but stops just short of giving me the same amazing high I felt with Crazy Little Thing. Please don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and I loved Nana and Peter the Dad (the girls names were over the top ) but what else would you expect from an avid history buff. The story focuses on the middle daughter, Liberty, aka Libby and her return home after loosing her job in an embarrassing manner, and her relationship with her longtime boyfriend is shaky as best. Her Dad is somewhat of a free spirit and decides in his retirement to purchase a historic old school house and convert it into a ice cream shop. He enlist the help of Libby, who worked as an event planner in her recently lost job. Enter Tom, tall, handsome quiet type and a handyman extraordinaire to help with the renovations. Where Libby is outgoing and verbose, Tom is introverted and introspective; he is living through a tragic event that leaves him working on repairing his relationship with his 15 year old daughter. There are some heartfelt moments, some funny moments, romantic moments and difficult moments. As much as I like both Libby and Tom, I did not have that love for the romantic couple that leaves me breathless, but I was happy with their ending. I know it is not fair to compare books by the same author as I'm sure they are like children to them; but CLT is such a classic in my humble opinion, that it is going to be hard to top. Not that I would expect this or any of her future books to do that, but with that in mind, I did enjoy this read and I think that you will to.
This was a quick read, so it's a good book for light summer reading while on vacation. However, the story line was formulaic and predictable from the beginning, and then the book ended abruptly- leaving too many loose ends- so it was a bit of a disappointment, in general. The two main characters (Libby and Tom) seemed an improbable couple. Libby's "too eager" personality made her come across as more of an adolescent, rather than adult; and Tom could be described as a brooding Neanderthal. He was moody, gave one-word replies most of the time (you could almost hear the grunting!), and appeared to be somewhat self-absorbed. I'm not sure what Libby found so appealing, unless she is just one of those women who find a man like that a 'challenge', rather than a turn-off? At least some of the detailed intimate encounters between the two of them added some "spice" to this otherwise ho-hum story (it appears that some other reviewers felt that the sex scenes were unnecessary; but, in my opinion, they were fairly tame, giving just enough 'information' without being overly-graphic). And, there was a bit of comic relief sprinkled throughout, as well, so the author seems to have tried to balance all of the "gloom and doom" with some lighter moments. In summary, this was not a great book, but it wasn't horrible, either. I have read some of the other books by this author, and if I were to make one suggestion to her, it would be to give the women in her books some maturity, rather than making 30-somethings sound as if they should still be in junior high.
